Another great farm photo! Eliza and one of our young Delaware laying hens. We invested in 30 heritage breed chickens to begin replacing the production pullets we purchased last year. We are picking breeds according to characteristics that we feel will make a more sustainable flock for the type of farming that we do. These birds are more active foragers, hardier in the winter, and many of them also make nice meat birds should we choose to raise their offspring for that purpose, or when the time comes to cull members of our flock. The hen pictured above fits all these characteristics and lays a beautiful brown egg!
